Excerpt from the Preface: To many people, religion is a very important part of their life. It tries to answer the existential questions inevitably posed by any human being such as, Why an I alive? Where am I going? What is the meaning of life? Why is there suffering? Why must I did? All religions not only try to provide answers to these questions, they also promise salvation, liberation, enlightenment and redemption. It is therefore ironic that religion can also be very oppressive to women. Why is this so? Many of the articles in this collection will attempt to answer this and similar questions. This volume is a revision of the first book on WOMAN AND RELIGION published in 1988. It is not just a reprint. A substantial portion, the collection of prayers and rituals, has been taken out to be published in a separate volume. Several articles have been added for a more international and interfaith perspective. It is not only Christianity that is discussed in relation to women but also Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam.
