Located in the heart of California's central coast, the Santa Maria Valley covers an area of mountains and hills that reaches the Pacific Ocean in Santa Barbara County. The valley's early history dates back to the Portola Expedition, which passed through Santa Maria on the California Mission Trail - called El Camino Real - and ended near Monterey Bay. When early settlers arrived, the valley was dry and desolate. Today, its landscape of richly colored agricultural fields is framed by rolling hills and scenic miles of grapevines that produce some of the world's most coveted wines. The first Filipinos in Santa Maria came primarily as part of the labor force that worked in the fields. It now boasts of several generations of professionals in various fields of endeavor that contribute to the well-being of the Central Coast region. The book uses archival photographs to present the distinctive stories from the past that shape the character of the community today, thus preserving the local heritage, making history available to all.

About the Authors
Carina Monica Montoya, a native of California, is also the author of Filipinos in Hollywood and the title belongs to the same Series: Images of America. The Series celebrates the history of neighborhoods, towns and cities across the country. The vintage images were supplied by the Santa Maria Valley Historical Society Museum. They span over a century of history, showcasing one of California's most picturesque agricultural communities.
