Excerpt from the "Are you prepared for Masada?" I was asked this question by a fellow pilgrim on our Holy Land tour. Our bus was leaving Qumran and we were told we were heading south along the Dead Sea for Masada. What preparation did one need, and why? All the days throughout our visits to old biblical sites, our memories were stirred back to our Sunday School lessons. Familiar old places appeared like magic and transported us into an ethereal-like reality. One loses his personal identity at such times by the fact of setting one's foot on old Judea's historical spots. One feels very little and unimportant against the background of the history of our civilization. Our bus stopped at a station where we were loaded into an elevator that carried us up to Masada. We had learned from our tour guide of the genocide of the enslaved Jews that took place on this rock. This sobered us for looking back and trying to guess what agonies preceded this ultimate sacrifice. As we walked in the haunting silence that prevails all over the rock, we could almost fell the passions and despair of the enslaved Jews which seemed to linger there on the time waves. Their miseries dominate and consecrate Masada. I do not believe one can visit and then leave Masada unmarked. The sweet-sad history of that island of rock sticking up in the desert of old Judea moves on with you. Whenever men are enslaved and human dignity is denied, Masada will be remembered. How can one be prepared for Masada? -Isabel Brogan
