"The research begins with a historical discussion of the development of Vigan as an important Spanish settlement with emphasis on its plaza-oriented community character. It proceeds to examine the residential patterns, the character of the colonial structure and facets of residential life specifically its interior spaces during the turn of the century in Vigan. The study assumes that these aspects are unintentional sources of objective data reflective of the activities and way of life of the Filipinos during the turn of the century. The broad features and components of these dwellings are discussed in relation to Philippine culture, for these dwellings became more than just physical forms that express human goals and activities but rather modifiers and definers of behavior. In recognition of the importance of the sociological approach to art history, correspondence between the qualities and styles of art forms and the character of social life and structures established. The researcher adopts this approach because it gives a more holistic view of the culture and society from which the art form exists; the physical environment, the nature principalia dwellings, the growth and development of the town and community wherein these dwellings are located are traced between the evolution of the physical form of the dwellings and the culture of the society where it exists."A Philippine import.
