Nestor Ibarra M. Gonzalez, PhD., or Dr. Nim as he is fondly called, spent many years in the Society of Jesus where he wore many hats: vocation director, chair of the Ateneo de Manila University Department of Communication, retreat director, Sunday priest, and head of two NGOs. But after over three decades in the Society, he gave up the priesthood to continue his journey of following God’s will. Dr. Gonzalez has written of that painful decision and of what he went through before and after the priesthood. He recounts his experiences in very candid fashion in the book Confessions of An Ex-Jesuit published by San Anselmo Publications. Critic and communication professor Isagani Cruz, PhD, of De La Salle University says that author also follows in the footsteps of National Artist for Literature NVM Gonzalez, who is Dr. Gonzalez’s father. Dr. Cruz explains, “Nim Gonzalez is both NVM Gonzalez and not. Nim has the same deceptive simplicity of expression, the same effortless profundity, the same genuine concern for the reader. But he is also Nim and not NVM…. As we follow Nim recollecting the twists and turns of his life on earth, we sense a presence that cannot be natural.”Dr. Cruz then concludes, “Nim is his father’s son, but more precisely, his Father’s son.”
