"This is a description and analysis of Chris-tian protest in Asia, by a priest-sociologist who for many years worked in that part of the world. Data came mainly from documents and news sources and secondarily from personal interviews and knowledge. Most of the book concerns activities of religious groups in India, Southeast Asia, and East Asia. Original material is presented mainly in Chapters Four through Six. Chapter Four documents the rise and activities of Catholic and Protestant transnational organizations which were meant to represent their faiths. Official statements from these groups have evidenced a commitment to change in the name of the poor, but collective actions have tended to be cautious. Chapter Five concerns "scouts," specialized religious groups such as student organizations and outstanding religious individuals. The chapter contains all-too-brief discussions of activities by such groups as industrial missions, women religious orders, and theologians. The fact of di-visions within the churches is evident." -Excerpts from the Book.
