Philippine history is replete with stories of heroic struggles, often by ordinary people who stood in the frontlines and faced the brutality of the conquering enemy. What Filipino historians refer to as "the Balangiga incident" of 1901-1902 illustrates not only the heroism of the Balangiga but also the brutality of the American soldiers who reduced this peaceful little port town in Samar into a "howling wilderness." The historical wound left by the slaughter in Balangiga still rankles, 100 years after the incident. The famous church bells that signaled the Filipinos' attack on the Americans' garrison are still in US custody, serving as war booty. America's current "global war on terrorism" serves as another pretext to reassert its presence in the Philippines. The Balangiga album is there a timely project for recalling that moment in our history when Filipinos fought valiantly against the conquering Americans.
