The Philippine Center New York on Fifth Avenue is known to many as the location of Philippine government offices officially representing the Philippines in the region and in the United Nations. It is also where diplomatic, social and cultural events are frequently held, whether organized by any of the government offices or by one of the hundreds of Filipino organizations in the region. The main lobby which features regular art exhibits throughout the year has become very popular for Filipino artists and art aficionados. Unknown to most, however; is that the Philippine Center is home of a growing collection of Philippine art. Beginning with the art pieces purchased in Manila and brought to New York to adorn the interiors of the building in 1974, the collection has grown rich with a wide array of works donated by Filipino artists based in the US, the Philippines and other parts of the world. Some of the artists have already achieved recognition as National Artists in the Philippines.
