AUTHORS & BOOKS

CECILIA MANGUERRA BRAINARD. Her poetic new novel, "The Newspaper Widow" is set in the Philippines in 1909 during the early years of the US colonial empire in Asia. An intriguing murder mystery, transformed into something greater along the way as love, loyalty and friendship are tested and refined. An award-winning author of 10 books, Cecilia teaches Creative Writing at the Writer's Program at UCLA Extension.

PROSY ABARQUEZ-DELACRUZ. "Even the Rainbow Has A Body: Distinct Artistic Legacies" is a rich collection of interviews of over 25 artists in the diaspora. A testimony to the creative spirit of the Filipino. Author holds a law degree from Whittier College School of Law in California and writes feature stories and a weekly column for Asian Journal in LA. She also has a Certificate on 2lst Century Leadership from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.

MARIANNE VILLANUEVA. In this collection of short stories, "Mayor of the Roses" award-winning author writes of the contrary beauty, ugliness and violence of her native country, as well as of the myriad contradictions of immigrant life in America. A former Stegner Fellow in Creative Writing at Stanford University, she has been writing about the Philippines and Filipino Americans since the mid-1980s.

IRENE SUICO-SORIANO. "Primates from An Archipelago" is a
cinematic collection of poetry which unravels threads of silence and oppression, tracing lineages on geographic and personal islands where memories and dreams are synonymous. An immigrant poet, she received the PEN Center USA Emerging Voices Fellowship in 2001 and is a staff member of the UCLA Asian American Studies Center.

ANGELA NARCISO-TORRES. This author's first book of poetry, "Blood Orange" won the Willow Books Literature Award for Poetry. A graduate of Warren Wilson MFA Program for Writers and the Harvard Graduate School of Education, she has received numerous writing Fellowships and is currently a senior poetry editor for RHINO, as well as Coordinator for Literary Events at Woman Made Gallery and a Reader for New England Review.

TESSIE JAYME. "Black Clouds in Manila" is a WWll fictional trilogy novel which chronicles the history of the Japanese Occupation of the country; depicts not only the heroism of Filipinos living at a time of war but their humanity as they find the grace to choose right actions despite bad situations.
