The book offers some insight into important aspects of that incident, which remain unknown. A new social vision expressed in the Masonic ideals that spread in Manila and elsewhere in the Philippines before the revolution played its part in conditioning the people's mind to opt for freedom. During the months of fighting, the ordinary Filipinos remained loyal to the Spanish priests detained by the Katipunan, and risked their lives to offer them food and clothing, while the Katipunero leaders seemed to have bragged about their anti-clericalism. Until Aguinaldo dispatched his agents to Mindanao in 1899, distance had sheltered that island from the turmoil in Manila and central Luzon. The Jesuit missionaries remained at their posts there, until ordered to leave for the safety of Manila when the Philippine political situation turned critical. And yet, as soon as peace returned, many provincial and town leaders wrote to the new American government and the Jesuit Superior in Manila asking them to send back "their" priests to continue the tasks they been abruptly forced to stop. These are aspects of the Philippine revolution a few scholars have described to help us form a valid judgement of how the Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines ended and how a new nation came into being.
