Uncle Clayton: A Soldier's Life in Letters, 1898-1901 is an extraordinary collection of soldier letters. At age seventeen, when joining the Army at the beginning of the Spanish-American War, Uncle Clayton saw with "new eyes" the United States, the Philippines, and China after the Boxer Rebellion. His letters contrast markedly with military records.

Uncle Clayton was killed in a Philippine Island jungle. This book is a documentary -- with timelines and notes to give the reader points of reference. Soldier letters and military records tell the story of an ordinary American in extraordinary times. These letters speak eloquently to our time.
