"TO THE PHILIPPINES WITH LOVE" is a book of art and high intelligence. Its autobiographical aspect does not disqualify it as pure literature, and the ordering that Miss Carr has made of her experience in the country does not diminish its authenticity as a faithful document, seen through the vision of a foreigner, of Philippine society in the years immediately after the Second World War. Other books by foreigners about the Philippines fail as literature because their writers react to Filippino life with definite and sometimes ready prejudices and sympathies. They are either shocked by our color and size, or they become sentimental over our history and present terms of our life. In either case, truth is falsified and fiction becomes an unwholesome vehicle of prejudice or faked emotions. This, I believe is the highest merit of Lorraine Carr's writing about a country not her own, living with people totally different from her, she is nevertheless equal to the moral challenge of her task, which is to present Filipinos not as exotic farmers, genteel middleclasses, or arrogant aristocrats or even as a different race, but as human beings. Lorraine Carr's triumph in this book is of the highest moral and social journalism.
