Younghusband offers a first-hand account of the Philippine Revolution and the Spanish-American War, from the eyes of a British military observer. The National Historical Society has previously already published works relating to the same period by American, Spanish, French, and German authors, each reflecting the particular bias defending on their background and nationality. Although they are witnessing the same events their position regarding Spain, the United States and the nascent Philippines changes accordingly. Younghusband speaks fondly of the Americans, since then as today the United States and Great Britain were allies with complimenting colonial policies. What makes this work stand out is the attention paid to the Philippine Revolution against Spain and the eyewitness accounts of Philippine life.
