The Hazards of Distance is a novella about family members forced to re-calculate the distances that separate them, even as they try to withdraw into teach other. Estrangement, aimless wanderings, death, and desertion result in mutual violations and in acts of violence, yet also in unexpected communions. They discover solidarity across distances as certainly as they find isolation within arm's length of each other. Thoughts and dialogues are often at cross-purposes: the means of evading crooked corners. By raising walls around themselves, some are ultimately deprived of the space to grow. Yet death and distance also liberate. They change but do not end life. Hazards is about the delicate relationship between life's many mysteries and its actual graces.
