This book is about forgotten heroes. A nation is poorer by so much everytime one of its heroes passes into oblivion. For as Tito Guingona, Jr. writes in one of these pages "the true treasures of the Filipino are not gold or silver." They are the men and women who heroic lives Guingona would bring back to us in this book. John F. Kennedy once did the same thing for his countrymen in his work "Profiles In Courage." Once in a while, he thought, a people must be reminded that it has sons and daughters who merit celebration because their gallantry, no matter how insufficiently told in history, is of intrinsic and decisive value to the nation. And so Tito Guingona, Jr. has written The Gallant Filipino. For my generation it is a particularly elating work for it deals mostly with Filipinos who fought and sometimes died in that dark but glorious period through which we lived, when the issues were so clear freedom vs. tyranny; democracy vs. fascism. The anxiety of the nation to bring about national reconciliation after World War II and the ambivalent position of the liberator himself, General Douglas MacArthur, resulted in the quick exoneration of Filipino leaders who collaborated with the enemy of the excuse that they had been "left behind by President Quezon to protect the people."... ...Tito Guingona, Jr., an outstanding and principled senator who is bound for higher things, is the right man to make this correction. -Raul S. Manglapus, Secretary of Foreign Affairs
