When Francisco Arcellana was given the title of National Artist for Literature in 1990, many people felt that he shouldn't have received it, or not yet anyway. There were other writers thought to be more deserving of the title--writers who were older, or younger, but "actively writing"--authors of books of full-length work: novels, full-length plays, the heavier several-hundred-pages of text compared to Arcellana's 64-page, 10-ounce booklet. But the value and worth of a writer's collected works and his literary life are not to be measured by the poundage of, nor by the count of the pages in, his few books. He could be measured by just the "baker's dozen" of his briefest short stories, or even a chapbook of poems, or a selection of essays. Toward the end of the author's writerly life, he should be remembered and recognized not by the size of his legacy by by the quality of work he will leave behind. -From the Editor's Introduction
