The serendipitous ways of the Holy Spirit sometimes amuse us in retrospect. This book by Father Josemaria S. Luengo is perhaps one of those works inspired by purely fortuitous events, which, with more prayers and proddings to the Spirit, may just hold the key to the beatification of our Visayan Protomartyr, Pedro Calungsod.

It was on one occasion, so fortuitous it escapes memory, that I mentioned to Fr. Luengo to do some research on Pedro Calungsod, who might just turn out to be a Boholano. I didn’t realize such a suggestion could enflame the creative passions of a scholar to set him on a trail of a young man who died some three hundred years ago.

Pedro Calungsod, heretofore known only through the work of the Jesuit Fathers who labored for the beatification of Diego de Sanvitores, now assumes a more concrete identity through the scholarly research of Fr. Luengo. Using published manuscripts from the archives of Spain, Fr. Luengo traces the beginnings of the Jesuit missions and their involvement in the evangelization efforts in the far-flung outposts of the Diocese of Cebu.

With new materials and a fresh perspective, this time focused on the person and mission of Pedro, this book is a valuable aid to the Cause of Pedro Calungsod.

May the reader discover in this book a renewed appreciation of the Church’s painstaking efforts of evangelizing all the corners of the world and find inspiration in the story of a young man who offered his life for the work of God.
