My Poems: A Lifetime Collection of Poetry is the story of the life of a remarkable woman, Sister Maria de Jesus Ybarra, wonderfully told through her life-long writing of thoughtful and engaging poems.
Sister Maria was born on October 14, 1928, in Edinburg, Texas, and passed away on May 2, 2015. She was the oldest in a family of 13; six girls and seven boys. Born during the Depression, she watched her family struggle. Her father worked for little pay for the local water company and her mother raised 13 children. Sister Maria learned to work hard at an early age. This made a strong impact on her later life.

She knew it was her vocation to become a nun from the young age of 15; even a later marriage proposal from a longtime family friend could not change her mind. She entered the Sisters of the Company of Mary in 1954, along with her sister Natalie and a younger sister, Ernestine. Sister Maria did not often express feelings about herself to others. Instead, she expressed her feelings and deeply-held beliefs in her poems. She recognized the inequality experienced by Hispanics and the positive work being done by those like Cesar Chavez and the priests and bishops of the Catholic Church. She dedicated her religious life to that cause.
