Mass for the Death of an Enemy is a black comedy dealing with the social, moral, and (surprise) theatrical quandaries of a small village in a large, hyperactive Cebuano town called Carcar, where most of the things described in the book never happened. Mass is a strange terrain for most Philippine-fiction readers if not other writers, being friendly to both the sacred and the profane, to the fantastic and the real; for being at the same time so commonplace and magical and somewhat like José Garcia Villa's seagull. Yet it is, again, a bright and breezy place, like a vacant street corner where the author's various disciplines meet, clash, mix, and point out some clouds darkening the horizon. But finally, they also throw some light on what hop there is for the Filipino's better part to triumph and take over the near and not totally fictional days to come.
