This volume on the Dapitan-Balingasag Mission by Fr. Jose S. Arcilla is not only a labor of scholarship and an essential part of the Christian Ministry to which the author has chosen to dedicate his life, but also a vital form of public service. It contains letter-reports of Jesuit missionaries on a complex world of realities that brought the "Moros," "Lumad tribes," and emerging Christian settlements into a kind of interactive relationship characterized by a dichotomy of love and hate, often resulting in incidents of violence and conflict. The vast amount of materials taken by the author from the Jesuit archives in Sant Cugat del Valles is clearly and coherently compressed in several volumes differentiated from other works by field or geographic categories. This volume focuses on the activities of the Jesuit mission in Northern Mindanao during the last three decades of Spanish rule. It is undoubtedly an important source for reconstructing the history of Mindanao during the dynamic period of Filipino nationalism as expressed by the Propaganda Movement (1872-1895) and the Revolution (1896-1898). The historical and cultural value of this work lies in the wealth of information on the flora and fauna of the towns, as well as on the local personalities like datus, sultans, and other leaders, including newly created colonial functionaries like gobernadorcillos, cabezas, etc. who had shaped the character and pattern of political, social, and economic transformation of tribes and communities.
