RENE ESCALANTE is an Associate Professor at De La Salle University. He earned his baccalaureate and master's degree in philosophy from St. Camillus College Seminary and Ateneo de Manila University respectively. In 2001, the University of the Philippines Diliman conferred on him a Ph.D. Degree in History. In 2003, DLSU sent him to Lincoln Memorial University in Tennessee as an exchange professor. While in the U.S., he conducted research in the National Archives and Records Administration, Library of Congress, and New York Public Library. He serves as Chair of the Department of History of De La Salle University (2006-2013), was elected Chair of the National Committee on Historical Research of the National Commission for the Culture and the Arts (2007-2010), and was appointed member of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Technical Panel on History from 2007-2009. In 2010, President Benigno S. Aquino appointed him as one of the Commissioners of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines. While teaching in UP Diliman and later in De La Salle University, he published articles in local and international journals and read papers in conferences abroad
