This work is among the most important contributions to Philippine history that any historian has made. Even the late authority on the subject of the origins of the Filipino clergy, Father Horacio de la Costa, could do no more than mention a few names in passing without any data or details. I remember how excited I was when I first began to share Dr. Santiago's findings with y classes in Philippine History at the University of the Philippines with his permission before he ever published. The first part tells the historic story of what happened while the other two are biographies. Naturally, there is repetition but I don't think it matters. Some readers will be interested in the first part and others will want the particular details of the other two. --Dr. William Henry Scott Philippine Historian
