By Lia Llamado and Adelaida Lim

The making of this Cafe cookbook was started 20 years ago when Cafe by the Ruins came into being. The idea of a cafe was thought of by a group of friends -- Christine Arvisu, David Baradas, Laida Lim and Baboo Mondoñedo -- as a summer activity but lived beyond many summers.... Just as Fifi and Lia share their stories of friendship, we share these recipes with you to try and prepare with pleasure. Food is really about sharing; it is also about love and friendship. and it is true that the joy of cooking is in the eating.

As Roland Escaig said, "Happiness is never offered. It has to be won, it has to be savored an it must be shared around the table." -- Baboo Mondoñedo, Baguio, 2008

“The Café family always seemed to stretch and grow—from artists to politicians, their kids and their kids’ kids. The rich friendships and sense of family love is what makes the Café what it is: an asylum, a sanctuary, a home—to everyone, as much as it is to us.” – Lia Llamado-Excerpts from the Foreword.
