BUILDING THE NATIONAL COMMUNITY: PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS AND OTHER HISTORICAL ESSAYS by Oscar L. Evangelista provides a frank assessment of the Philippine condition: that after all out struggles to become a nation, the true sprint of nationhood continues to elude us. Our perception of "nation" remains divided. There is the "nation" of the elite and the "nation" of the masses. We have yet to reconcile these two perceptions into a single, national aspiration. This is, so to speak, the canker in the rose. While the book examines Philippine history both from "above and below," it has less to do with ideology than with sociocultural implications brought on by the events that have shaped the national community, for better or for worse. It takes us through five stages of Philippine history, starting with the archipelago's ethnic communities at the cusp of the Christian era up to the period of independence and until 1991. Although separated by centuries, each epoch had left behind similar residual effects. One of the most compelling of these is what Professor Evangelista perceives as our inability to ride above the brangay or bayan stage, which is why our loyalty tends to be focused on kinship, patronage politics and ethnic and regional identity, leaving little room for "national feelings." -Pablo S. Trillana III (Foreword)
