Bahay Kubo by Hermes Alegre

Buhay Kubo is perhaps the best-known and best-loved folk song in the Philippines. Its Tagalog lyrics have been passed down through generations by way of oral tradition. The book includes words and music. The lyrics include some plants which are not indigenous to the Philippines, such as peanuts (mani), eggplant (talong), and mustard (mustasa). These foreign elements could mean that the folk song originated or evolved during colonial times. Other native plants of the Philippines are also used in the song such as jicama (singkamas), sigarilyas, sitaw, bataw, patani which belong to the bean family, kundol, payola, upo at kalabasa which are all interrelated members of the squash family, and other commonly known vegetables such as raddish (labanos), sibuyas (onions), kamatis (tomatoes), bawang (garlic) and luya (ginger). Children learn the Philippine environment and the food they eat thru this song. Children normally enjoy learning this song.
