An Basaynon: A History of Basey, Samar and Its People by Wilmo C. Orejola

The book traces the history of the town from historical accounts and writings of Fr Francisco Ignacio Alcina, the Jesuit Missionary historian assigned to the Pintados region (Samar and Leyte) Alcina wrote the monumental nine-volume book, Historia de las Islas e Indios de Bisayas, completed in 1668 in Catbalogan. The book recorded the culture and history of the Bisayan people prior to the coming of Christianity to the islands, and during his time. The original texts were written in Spanish and translated into English, and were annotated and edited by the late Fr Cantius J. Kobak, OFM and Fr Lucio Gutierrez, OP. The Franciscans and the Agustinians came later and continued their evangelization in the area. The book also include details about the Philippine and American War, the Pulahanes in Samar, How Bassey got its name as well as legends, folktales and customs of the area, among other things. The author who self-published the book is a medical doctor who lives with his family in New Jersey and North Carolina. He had previously written two books: The Mat Weaver's Story: The Legend of Bungansakit, an epic poem (2001) and a historical novel: Ghosts of the Insurrection (2006). 2019
