Filipinos? Yes, we were citizens of the Philippine Islands serving Uncle Sam, during the Vietnam War.
We landed at Fort Mason Army Base in San Francisco as U.S. Navy and Coast Guard recruits aboard the USNS Barrett - a troop transport that brought us to America.
The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) classified our entry as not legally admitted for permanent residence in the United States of America. In essence, we were technically undocumented aliens (emphasis added). Undocumented is defined as having no official visa for U.S. residency. None of our Filipino recruits had a passport or a U.S. visa to enter.
The same classification distinguished future Filipinos enlisting in the Navy or Coastal Guard. By the time the U.S. discontinued recruiting Filipinos in 1992, about 45,000 had already enlisted and 99% stayed for at least 20 years to receive retirement pay, free medical care for life and U.S. citizenship.
