"In 1609, the Spaniard Antonio de Morga, who held office in the Philippines from 1595 to 1605, published the first historiographical work on our country that described the native civilization that would soon disappear. Rizal discovered Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas in the British Museum and decided to reprint it for the Filipinos in Paris in 1889, with his commentaries. In 1990, in Chile, Elizabeth Medina read of "some articles written by Retana, on how Spain lost the Philippines, that are worth reading" in a 1906 letter from the great Spanish writer Miguel de Unamuno to a friend. She requested copies from Madrid and discovered the first Rizal biography, published by W.E. Retana in 1907. She immediately began translating it into English, with commentaries to clarify historical and cultural meanings that would otherwise be missed by postmodern Filipinos. Though her manuscript was accepted by the National Centennial Commission, Ms. Medina has published it herself in a limited edition of 1,000 copies for it to come out in time for the Centennial."
