Historically significant events and persons have a tendency to become larger than life and out of reach. Heroes appear as superhuman and different from the ordinary person, and thus untouchable and unreal. The statues, memorials and words in textbooks extol the virtues and activities of great men and women, but also place them on a level out of reach of mortals. In actuality, heroes were ordinary persons, with emotions and feeling, who suffer real pain and suffering. 'The Trial of the Thirteen Martyrs of Cavite', by Jose Nave, graphically describes the ordeal--unjust and horrible as it was--of Cavite's martyrs. To many, Trece Mertires is a name of a town, but this account shows who the martyrs were, and builds them up as people captured in the paranoid net of a Spanish official. The description of the trial is vivid, and those days of terror are brought to life once more. For a long time--perhaps too long a time--this account remained out of reach of most readers, it having been written in Spanish. With this English translation, it is hoped that the martyrdom of the thirteen victims of injustice will be kept alive and remembered as part of the nation's history. And through this, too, will be shown he fact that heroes are not supermen, but real people. People who, in this case, suffered from a great and painful injustice, thus firing the revolutionists to fight harder. -Ricardo Trota Jose - Excerpts from the Foreword.
