Jose P. Rizal, National Hero of the Philippines is a popular writer and this children's book is one of his titles. This is a popular tale of the monkey and the turtle who agreed to take their halves of a banana tree. The monkey took the upper half and the turtle, the lower half. What follows is a classic fable of cunning and greed that escalates into a battle of wits and, ultimately, a fight for survival. Retold in English and illustrated by the National Hero himself. He sketched it on a guest book belonging to Paz Pardo de Tavera in Paris in 1885. Rendered in full color by Auri Asuncion Yambao and Grace Asuncion.
A Philippine import.
