"Cyril Connolly, in his inventive autobiography, Enemies of Promise, separated literature into two major styles: the vernacular and the Mandarin. The vernacular style reflects a style that is rooted in more commonplace language, while the Mandarin style is the opposite: it is a style that uses complex and elevated vocabulary and often gambols in wordplay. For example, Hemingway wrote in a vernacular style: in his most anthologized short stories, he wrote in conversational English, as with The Killers or A Clean, Well-lighted Place. In contrast, Vladimir Nabokov’s Signs and Symbols, also one of the most well-regarded short stories of all time, belongs to the Mandarin style: Nabokov’s style is complex and extremely granular, and the inherent difficulty in his style is rewarded by patient and close reading.

Gregorio Brillantes’s Apollo Centennial is an excellent short story collection. For those who wish to read a simple story about the horrors of totalitarianism, the eponymous story is perfect. It tells of a Philippines in 2069 where people have not escaped the Marcos dictatorship, and is brilliant in its simplicity. It was written in a vernacular style."
