Panagani is a continuing story, just as the fight by some courageous Filipinos for clean government, economic and social justice, and what former President Carlos Garcia called "respectable independence" is far from a completed struggle. With fictitious characters like Don Adriano Castro and his family who are small landowners, and Basilio Ulep and his family who are farm tenants at the Castro farm, the story begins in the 1960's in the fictitious province of Amianan. The impact of what appears to be a corrupted political system, unfulfilled promises of land reform, and the continuing influence of the United States in the Philippines are reflected in the life and relationships of these two families.
