Anak Datu is a Taosug Muslim phrase that literally means, son of a datu. A1though this story is fiction, most of the setting and characters are based on research studies of the lives of Suluanos in the early 15th and 16th centuries. Anak Datu is a simple tale of love and humility, personal sacrifices, dedication, leadership, and bravery set against the fascinating customs and traditions of the Taosugs of Sulu, the first people to embrace Islam in the Southern Philippines. Untouched by foreign influences for centuries, they have developed a strong organization within a rich cultural background. The story reveals partly some interesting aspects of Filipino Muslim culture.
