The essays in this collection were written for various purposes on various occasions. Some first appeared in the author's columns "Hindsight" and "Frankly Speaking" in the Philippine Sar and Philippine Graphic, respectively. Others were delivered in conferences around the country for teachers and for writers. Although written over a period of many years, these trenchant essays revolve around the author's one abiding passion: literature, its uses and functions, its roots and sources, its hazards and rewards, its continuing relevance in the cultural life of a nation. Here in these essays, the author ultimately speaks of his own ars poetica, the guiding principle that underlies the craft of his work and the breadth of his vision, especially as a legacy to the younger generations of writers. An outstanding alumnus of Far Eastern University, F. Sionil Jose was named National Artist for Literature in 2001. - Jaime An Lim
