A HABIT OF SHORES is the sequel anthology to A NATIVE CLEARING (1993). Together with MAN OF EARTH (1989), it covers almost a hundred years of our poetry in English. It comprises Filipino poets born between 1942 and 1976--more than three decades; in all, there are 96 poets, of whom thirty are women poets. That it includes a few Filipino American poets is perhaps suggestive that even in America, the poet has a sense for his shores by which he forges--in its double sense, to fashion and to feign--from English a vocabulary and syntax the author all of five years between his teaching and administrative duties, offers a rich variety of poetic styles and a broad range of poetic themes. As in the other anthologies, apart from the Introduction which offers a historical survey of our poetry in English from 1905 to the present, A HABIT OF SHORES provides the reader informative Notes on every individual poem (388 poems in all), a bio-sketch on each poet (often from the poet him/herself), and a bibliography of the sources of the poems.
