This slender volume consists of three interrelated pieces written by Professor Renato Constantino at different periods, but which exhibit a continuity in his theme of nationalism for our time. His reflections on Nationalism and Liberation provide thematic materials which posit nationalism not as an end goal but as part of the initial process that eventually will lead to social liberation. In this essay, he discusses the escalation of mass consciousness as the contradictions among the various components of the nationalist movement are resolved. In the essay Nationalism and History, Constantino restates his stand that history is indispensable as a weapon in the nationalist struggle, a theme that has pervaded his revisionist books on Philippine history. The validity of this thesis is reiterated in his Nationalism and Southeast Asia n which he applies the framework on his Nationalist Alternative to the region. In all essays, the author elaborates the features and the tasks of nationalism for the contemporary period.
