Today eviction and homelessness are rampant. They weren’t such ordinary things 50 years ago. Nevertheless, those times were turbulent. We witnessed assassinations here at home and watched the war in Viet Nam on our television sets or we took to the streets in protests that sometimes turned violent. Those were also the years of Woodstock, Watergate, the Flower Children of Haight-Ashbury, and the seizing of Alcatraz by Native Americans who held the island for 19 months. In 1968, across the Bay from Alcatraz, just on the edge of San Francisco’s financial district,150 old Asian men, mostly uneducated, mostly WWII Veterans, are served eviction notices. Having been denied the right to marry or own property or vote in the America of their youth, they had made home and family with each other. Some of these men had lived in the three-story VFW hotel for over 50 years. Now they have 30 days to gather their belongings or be forcibly removed. Will they be denied again? No! This time, no! The old men decide they have one more fight left in them. THIS is it. The music—with over 30 songs—was composed by our Music Director, Winston Raval, who won a life-time achievement award in May 2018 for his 22 movie soundtracks in the Philippines. His music is a unique modern jazz that reverberates with ancient flat drums and flutes from the Philippines, as well as bodhrans and pipes from Ireland. The lyrics are often witty (“If it doesn’t pay well, I can do it!”), sometimes sweet (“The warm wee nests in the Mission walls, to the swallows, home.”) Always poetry. WARRIOR can bring the current problems of eviction and homelessness back into our conversations as we look for inspired ways to bring change.
