Out of Cebu' collects 28 essays by award-winning author, Cecilia Manguerra Brainard. Many of the essays are about Cebu, Philippines: its history, the places to see in this southern Philippine city, her experiences growing there, and colorful accounts about her mother's family, the Cuencos, a powerful political family in Cebu and the Philippines. There are also travel and food essays, all told from Brainard's unique point of view of a Cebu-born writer now living in the United States.

"The book is a good read...we get 'straight from the horse's mouth' how it was to grow up with, or with the awareness of being, a girl of the Cuenco family. Here is an awesome family, one of the 75 families of distinction that Cebu City is honouring during its Diamond Jubiles as a city this year," Dr. Erlinda Kintanar-Alburo, Prompdi-wise, Sugbu News

"Many of the 28 essays included in the book, 'Out of Cebu: Essays and Personal Prose' are autobiographical and chronicle my growing up in the island of Cebu, Philippines. Some essays are also about family members; and in the writing about them, I've brought in a lot of history about Cebu and the Philippines. My mother's political family, the Cuenco family, was fun to write about, and so the book includes colorful accounts about my grandfather, my grandmother, great-grandmother, as well as my mother. The book also includes articles about my life in America as well as my visits to other countries such as Italy, France, Peru, Kenya, among others.
My novels, When the Rainbow Goddess Wept and Magdalena, are set in the mythical place, Ubec, which is Cebu backwards. The book, Out of Cebu, looks at the real place, Cebu, which obviously inspired my works of fiction." -Excerpts from the Author.
