"It's been over 100 years since a book of Philippine Mats has been put together, it is hoped that this book will make up for the long hiatus.

The mat is a ubiquitous and indispensable object in the Philippines. Used for many purposes and woven from many fibers, when one sees the spectrum of Philippine mats in terms of material used, creativity expressed and the Philippine universe exhibited, you realize that these are not products of craftsmanship so much as works of artistry.

Rara is the art and tradition of weaving mats: rara buri is how the Ati of Marikudo, Isabela, Negros Occidentai will call the weaving of buri mats. Darara is the large mat for rice grains that was rara-om or woven by a Maranao expert pararara, tarara or mat weaver. The Tagbanua of Aborlan, Palawan will say "rara it ikamen", while the Ilocano from Bangui Peninsula will say "agrara it ikamen" to refer to weaving pandan mats. A Capiznon from Dumalag takes pride in their "rara" or the weaving of banban with traditional patterns.

Banig or mats are the end-products of rara, a process of creative and artistic manipulation which makes use of long stripe of palm, leaf, vine and even branches that are combined to make the mats supple, durable and easy to use.

The colors, the materials, the uses, the varieties in both their common or mundane level and their outstanding and accomplished heights are the subject of this book of Philippine mats by Our Collaborative author Mr. Elmer Nocheseda." -Excerpts from the book.
