"The brochure content is the collection of liturgical vestments woven out of native Philippine materials and fabrics, designed by Dom Martin de Jesus Gomez, O.S.B., a monk of the Monastery of the Transfiguration, Malybalay, Bukidnon, Philippines. It celebrates Philippine indigenous heritage and artistry through this collection of vestments which include weaves from Northern Luzon to Southern Mindanao as well as embroidery and textile materials produced in the Philippine during pre-colonial times. Dom Martin was a well-known couturier in Manila before he entered the Monastery. And his work is a pioneering effort; the use of native materials in an extensive and researched way was never done before for the sacred liturgy in the Philippines.
He made use of ethnic weaves and embroidery from about twenty regions, illustrating a weaving tradition that in some places spanned for centuries. The project also meant finding the right blend of culture, theology and spirituality. Since liturgy is both worship and prayer, Dom Martin went beyond what is purely cultural and artistic. With photographs in color, this is not just a collection of artful clothing made specifically for
Holy Mass but a celebration of what is truly Filipino.
