This catalog was produced by the Pacific Asia Museum for the exhibition ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF PHILIPPINE PAINTING held at the museum in Pasadena, California from June 26 to December 30, 1984 "The nation of the Philippines is made up of a remarkable group of islands rich in natural resources and natural beauty, but its most valuable resource is its people. A high degree of culture existed in the Philippines over 2,000 years ago, and important finds of superb gold objects from the southern islands attest to this fact. The Chinese traded objects of porcelain for those of gold, rare woods, and spices. This trade flourished actively from about the 5th century A.D. until the end of the Ch'ing Dynasty (1912) with the most active periods being the Sung Dynasty (960-1279), Yuan Dynasty (1260-1368), and the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Extensive archeological field work is now being done, and many fine examples of Chinese ceramics have come to light. The Spaniards came in the early 16th century and by the 1590's, the University of Santo Tomas had already been established in Manila. After this time, a great trade flourished between another Spanish colony, Mexico.
