The common criticism of women's groups is that women are often portrayed in the media in stereotypical roles. Stories that sympathize with women ten to portray them as victims, with little to say about how they deal with their problems. Front page stories are usually about politicians and only a few are about women. We are all stakeholders in a free press regardless of our station in life and political beliefs. When that realization comes, perhaps the best option for the survival of journalism in the Philippines will be found. More voices are needed to arrive at a definition of what journalism should be in this new age. It is not only newspaper that are about to change; very likely, journalism will, too. Whether that will be a good thing or not depends on how media owners and practitioners view their roles in society. Politics has become so embedded in the life of the press that even journalists find it hard to imagine one without the other. The process of disengaging the two would be long and arduous. Yet, it is a path that journalist must take. There is a sense of sadness that come with the realization that the world of corruption will be with us for a long time--unless we find the words that will define what we want ourselves to become.
