In 1962, Pres. Diosdado Macapagal appointed Nemesio E. Prudente as president of Philippine College of Commerce, a school so obscure he did not know where it was.
In Doc Prudente: Nationalist Educator, Nelson Navarro provides a rich account of the life of an educator and political activist who, in an intrepid letter to Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, described himself as a progressive nationalist. The author's deft maneuvering through the years of the life of his subject is built on a review of the literature on Philippine society and history and multiple interviews with friends, relatives, and other resource persons. Going through the pages of this book, one could feel the nuanced appreciation that the author has of the vibrant life of Dr Nemesio Prudente (Doc Prudente). One can surmise that having known the subject personally over many years, including the days of their engagements with the anti-dictatorship movement in the 1970s, provides Navarro the ability to put a rich texture in his narratives — something that evokes C.W. Mills' concept of the sociological imagination. This work is a fine illustration of the author's sociological imagination at work. It shows Navarro's ability to understand and contextualize a person's life story in the general flow of history. This book reflects a quality of thinking that recognizes and grasps how history and biography intertwine in a most profound manner — that our individual lives are but strands of a metaphorical rope that is history. This book illustrates how one person's life has been part of a meaningful pattern of social change and structures.
