Considered an evil bird, the Raven may well be also the soul- Ra - of the Egyptian. Evil merely because it has known the truth of darkness, and has come back from it, and so it quotes: Nevermore! The Poet as Raven is not entirely a different kind of a bird. Plato wanted the Poet banished from the Republic, for the Poet is evil, live. And to the Asian Filipino consciousness, the Raven is symbol, indeed, of immortality. The bird image abounds in Philippine art and literature. It is "Ako'y isang ibong sawi"- the bird of misfortune; or "Ibong mang may layang lumipad"-the captive bird of freedom in the struggle for nationalism against American imperialism. And in the dance, the "tinikling" or flitting bird refusing to be trapped in the bamboo brakes. And in the Filipino saying for accepting reality: "Pagputi ng uwak" - when the crow turns white, the Raven has become indeed the intimation of immortality, which is what the Artist/Writer is. Thus each of the authors in this book says: I'm a Raven, evermore.
