The stories, poems, and artwork contained in this volume are produced by Vista Community College students, alumni, and faculty. Like our students, the work is diverse and surprising. In one story, Marvin, a gin-soaked rate, is able to inspire a janitor to change his life. In another, Herbert learns that imagination is his strongest tool in his endless "war with the plum trees." The subject matter in prose and poetry ranges from learning to drive or communicate with dolphins or accept death to eating somi in Pedalidi, understanding the family history of mustard yellow walls on a kitchen in Oakland, or surviving a disaster on the gambling boat, the S.S. Whangamomona. From "Distractions take a Holiday" to "Kudus at the Watering Hole," Vista's paintings, drawings, ceramics, photographs, and this year particularly, new media art, also demonstrate surprising range of subject matter. from the intricate monochromatic details of plants in "Enchantment," to the saturated color simplicity of "Bridge Over the Yangtze," Vista artists perceive and express their worlds in intriguing and challenging ways. This year, for the first time, we are featuring the short stories of two high school students who have won a Vista-sponsored literary contest. We applaud the efforts of thee young writers, and we are honored to be able to pass along to you the inspiring work contained in this year's edition of Milvia Street.
