THE PHILIPPINE ARMY, 1935-1942 presents a history of the Philippine Army during the years immediately preceding the Second World War, and discusses the development of the Commonwealth's national defense plans. While the Philippine military has been subject to numerous studies, its development in the 1930s has not been given much attention. This book tries to fill in that gap. Controversies and problems in the national defense plan and in the army; the dominance of Quezon and MacArthur; politics and international tensions--these are but a few of the themes that arise in the growth and development of the Philippine Army when the Philippines was preparing for independence amidst darkening clouds of war. Interestingly, but perhaps not surprisingly, many of the problems and fears of that time have a contemporaneous ring to them.
