Maria Felisa A. Syjuco was born in Manila on Septermber 18, 1958, the youngest of four children of elsa Arellano and Jose Syjuco. She obtained both her elementary and secondary education from the Assumption Convent. From this religious school for girls, she went directly to Ateneo de Manila University in Loyola Heights, Quezon City, then turned co-educational, for her college education. In 1979, she graduated from the Ateneo de Manila with the degree of Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. After a brief sting as Staff Assistant at the Philippine Commercial and Industrial Bank, she enrolled at the University of the Philippines for graduate study in her foremost and actual interest: history. Her course work from then on provided welcome challenges and liberally nourished her love for research, culminating in her major work, her masteral thesis, which became the basis for this book. To this day, the author remembers that Japan is one country that has always fascinated her. This, together with the fact that she is the daughter of a survivor of World War II's infamous "Death March" must have influenced somehow her choice of research work that led to the writing of this book. She is at present a faculty member of the Department of History, College of Social Sciences and Philosophy of the University of the Philippines. The Kempei Tai is a name given to the Japanese Military Police.
