The book has been described as a "fun" book disguised as a cookbook; a brief autobiography with an extended discussion on food. The recipes are authentic Bicol edibles. To quote Francis Garchitorena who wrote the Introduction to the book, "Ning (the author) has captured the lightheartedness and the familiarity one must have with food, something perhaps akin to how the French supposedly rhapsodize about their wines - except that Bicolanos do not rhapsodize. Bicolanos only look up in narrow-eyed delight as the gata (coconut milk) flows through their tastebuds, soothing the sting of the labuyo (hot pepper).on their tongues and, enhancing the delights of laing, (a gabi or taro dish) or of the crab or fish which completes the dish."

If you love regional cooking, you must have this book! Almost every page has a photograph of the dish.
