This volume inaugurates the first publication of the Manila Studies Association under the joint auspices of and in partnership with the Philippine National Historical Society (PNHS) and the National Committee on Historical Research of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). The papers selected for the this volume were presented at the annual conferences and lectures of the Manila Studies Association from 1989-1993 and span the range of the archaeology and history of Manila and the Philippines from pre-Spanish times through the Spanish and American colonial periods.
