This issue of Manila takes off from the Manila Studies Association 22nd Annual Conference, where recent studies on and related to Manila were presented by academicians and independent researchers. Last year's conference gathered scholars from different disciplines with the aim to provide a forum by which a healthy inter-disciplinal discussion and debate on issues and concerns about the study of Manila and the country can materialize. Topics include early encounters between the Spanish empire and the natives of sixteenth century Philippines, formation of townships, colonial economic policies, history, archaeology, and film.
